Architecture and Animism
An Alternative Beinnale

At the request of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale (TAB), ICARCH has no formal relationship with the Biennale and no permission to create an alternate biennale in response to TAB.   As a supporter of intelligent discourse, ICARCH hopes that architects and artists worldwide will participate with the 6th Biennale - Edible; Or, The Architecture of Metabolism

Hello.

We invite you to The First Zoom Architecture Biennale.

Theme: ARCHITECTURE & ANIMISM.

It will be a complementary (and polemical) biennale to the one organized in Tallinn, Estonia, for the field of architecture opening on September 7, 2022.

Tallinn planned to have two biennales: one for art, one for architecture.

The theme of the Art Biennale was: ANIMISTIC COSMOLOGIES.

The theme of the 6th Tallinn Architecture Biennale is: EDIBLE ARCHITECTURE.

We feel the seriousness of the art biennale is not matched by the architecture biennale.

This is why we thought of creating an alternative architecture biennale, to complement the art biennale, whose theme, as written above, is Animistic Cosmologies.

We invite you to submit any kind of work that addresses the theme of this digital biennale: ARCHITECTURE & ANIMISIM.

You could contribute with theoretical works (essays, articles, etc), or with projects or realized buildings that address the theme.

Our world was de-sacralized. We feel we need to be less preoccupied with eating / consuming, since this is actually the whole problem with the consumptive obsessions of our time. We feel, instead, a strong need to attempt to re-spiritualize architecture and our life altogether.

On the other hand, a closer collaboration with Nature could only benefit us. It is actually vital that we return to Nature, not as conquerors, but as humble learners. The mysteries of Nature are still there, to be approached with reverence and even timidity, that timidity that makes us absorbant of its great lessons.

Let’s renounce our colonialist obsessions, and let’s study Nature with open hearts.

Could a stone or a tree have a spirit ?

Why not ?

Our objectivist assumptions lead to a great cultural and spiritual impoverishment.

Let’s try to walk back, of possible.

BRING BACK SPIRIT TO STONE AND WOOD ALIKE.

Maybe nothing is truly inanimate in our world, except our soulless souls.

LET’S START A REVOLUTION: A MATERIALISTIC DEGROWTH, AND A SPIRITUAL RENEWAL.

LET’S CREATE A DIFFERENT KIND OF BIENNALE. TOTALLY SUSTAINABLE, A BUDGET ZERO BIENNALE. A BIENNALE FOR THE HEART AND THE MIND.

Dan Coma, ICARCH
